Southern Downs Regional Council is undertaking redevelopment works to upgrade four key public toilet blocks and a picnic shelter as part of an ongoing initiative to improve facilities across the region for locals and visitors.

The $1.12m project has been made possible through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program – Phase 3, together with funding from Sunwater and the Queensland Community Fishing Grants Program and provides new facilities at McGregor Park, Jim Mitchell Park, Brock Park and Boat Ramp Road, Leslie Dam.

During construction, the existing toilet block at Brock Park will remain open while temporary toilets will be provided at Jim Mitchell Park.

Southern Downs Deputy Mayor Sheryl Windle said the improved public amenities will serve as an investment in the region’s growth and create welcoming and accessible spaces that promote community enjoyment.

“Parks and open spaces are essential for creating liveable, sustainable and resilient communities. They offer a range of benefits that enhance our quality of life and contribute to the health and well-being of our communities,” Deputy Mayor Windle said.

“Council is working on a series of redevelopment projects aimed at bolstering community facilities across the region and these projects have been selected based on feedback from the community.

“With the assistance of government funding, Council is delivering much-needed facility upgrades that will provide locals and visitors with modern, functional and practical amenities.

“These projects also serve to support industry, business and the resilience of the local economy.

“By investing in the upgrade of public toilet blocks and recreational facilities, Council is laying the groundwork for a more vibrant and prosperous community, fostering growth and opportunity for residents and businesses alike.”

Fast-tracked construction is expected to be completed before 30 June 2024 and Council will keep the community updated with regular posts on social media. Council thanks the community for its patience and cooperation during construction.

The Jim Mitchell, McGregor and Brock Park projects are funded by the Australian Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

The Leslie Dam project is funded by Sunwater and the Queensland Community Fishing Grants Program.
